A Message to Our Institutional Subscribers

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) publishes JBC on a non-profit basis and we are keenly aware of both the limited funds available to libraries for serials and the escalating costs of serial subscriptions. We have recently digitized all content of JBC back to inception, 1905. We feel this is a valuable service to all of our users.

In setting the price for the institutional subscriptions, we again carefully weighed the budgetary constraints on most institutions against our rising costs to produce both the print and online versions of the Journal. The 2008 rate for JBC Print of $2,625 and JBC Online of $2,460 represent a modest increase from 2007 rates given the amount of content published by JBC. The Journal provides scientists with almost 40,000 pages of highly cited biochemical research each year and at $2,625 per year, the printed Journal represents the best value in the biomedical sciences literature. In addition, we feel that at $2,460 per year, JBC Online represents a remarkable value. An institutional online subscription allows unlimited access to all individuals, faculty, staff and students at one campus of the institution. Considering the many added values of the online Journal, such as the "Papers in Press" section that provides access to JBC papers as soon as they are accepted, search capabilities and links to Medline as well as other biomedical data sources, the price of $2,460 per year for this kind of institutional site license is remarkably low compared to the site license costs for other sources of biomedical research information.

We recognize that an archive product is an important adjunct to an online subscription and, accordingly, JBC Online provides free and unlimited access to all articles appearing in the online Journal prior to the current subscription year. This policy provides an archive to our subscribers while also providing free worldwide access to some of the best biomedical research available.
